The Solemnity of St George Evensong was a focused and prayerful occasion, shaped by a well-used 45-minute rehearsal under Gabs Damiani and Fr Matthew Topham. The choir adapted quickly to the plainsong style, delivering the psalmody with clarity and natural flow, particularly in lines such as “When Israel came out of Egypt: and the house of Jacob from among the strange people.” Damiani’s Westminster Cathedral–influenced accompaniment gave the chant a steady, dignified character, while the Magnificat—“My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour”—was sung with restrained confidence. The hymn Deus, tuorum militum stood out as a fitting centerpiece, its text “O God, thy soldiers’ crown and guard” well matched by the choir’s disciplined yet expressive tone.
The organ added both colour and contrast: Fasolo’s versets complemented the chant with elegance, while Schneider’s Praeludium in G minor brought a burst of energy without disrupting the liturgical flow. The readings were clearly delivered, with Isaiah’s “Fear not, for I have redeemed you” and the Gospel’s “Abide in me, and I in you” providing a strong spiritual thread. A good congregation, including many from East Hendred and nearby villages, contributed to a sense of shared devotion. Overall, the service was notable for its coherence and musical assurance, achieved within a modest preparation time.
