Gabs at Dorchester-on-Thames: Sacred Music in a Historic Setting

Throughout June, Gabs Damiani directed the Bevan Consort at the Roman Catholic church in Dorchester-on-Thames, leading a series of beautifully prepared liturgies in place of the choir's Director of Music, Ryan Wigglesworth. Set within the tranquil surroundings of this historic Oxfordshire village, each service combined musical excellence with a deep sense of prayer and reverence.

The programmes were thoughtfully planned to reflect the Church's liturgical calendar, drawing on the rich traditions of Catholic sacred music. Gregorian Chant formed the foundation of the liturgy, sung with clarity, poise and an unhurried sense of flow that allowed its timeless beauty to emerge naturally. The chant was complemented by finely balanced polyphonic Mass settings, whose expressive lines and carefully blended textures enhanced the contemplative atmosphere of the services.

As conductor, Damiani directed with quiet assurance and musical sensitivity. His attention to phrasing, balance and textual clarity enabled the choir to sing with confidence and precision, while preserving the natural devotional character of the liturgy. The Bevan Consort responded with disciplined ensemble singing and a warm, well-focused sound, demonstrating both technical accomplishment and a clear understanding of the sacred repertoire.

The organ voluntaries, carefully chosen to complement the seasons of the Church year, provided moments of reflection before and after the liturgy. Elegantly performed, they made full use of the instrument's tonal colours and offered fitting musical meditations that enriched the worship without drawing attention away from it.

These June services were a fine example of sacred music serving the liturgy in the way it was intended: enhancing prayer, illuminating the sacred texts and drawing the congregation more deeply into worship. Gabs Damiani's accomplished leadership, together with the Bevan Consort's polished singing, ensured that each celebration was both spiritually uplifting and musically distinguished, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
