conducted by David Crown

Gabs Damiani, organist

All Saints' Church, Brill, Aylesbury HP19 9RP and Pusey House Chapel, Oxford

11th/12 July 2026

Two evening performances of 19th-century choral music, bringing together sacred works by Verdi, Bruckner and Rheinberger. The programme offered a wonderful contrast of styles, from the simplicity and intimacy of Verdi’s Pater Noster to the warmth and lyricism of Rheinberger’s Cantus Missae, culminating in Bruckner’s magnificent Mass No. 2 in E minor. There was a real sense of atmosphere throughout, with the music conveying both the grandeur and the spirituality of the Romantic choral tradition.

The Bruckner in particular was a highlight, with its striking combination of powerful choral writing, moments of great delicacy and wonderfully expressive instrumental textures. The organ played an important role in creating the distinctive sound-world of the Mass, and Gabs Damiani’s accompaniment provided a sensitive and assured foundation for VOX’s performance. A rewarding and atmospheric concert, beautifully bringing this remarkable repertoire to life.
