Gabs plays at a Roman Catholic Service of Confirmation
The Service of Confirmation at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Henley-on-Thames, was a joyful and deeply reverent occasion, bringing together candidates, their families, parishioners and visitors to celebrate one of the most important sacraments in the Catholic Church. Presided over by the Rt Rev. Bishop Richard Walker, the liturgy welcomed fourteen candidates as they received the Sacrament of Confirmation, marking a significant milestone in their faith journey.
Music played a central role in the celebration, helping to shape both the solemnity and the joy of the occasion. The congregation sang Marty Haugen’s Mass of Creation with confidence and enthusiasm, while the carefully chosen hymns encouraged wholehearted participation and added warmth and dignity to the service.
At the Collins two-manual organ, Gabs Damiani provided sensitive and assured accompaniment throughout the liturgy. His playing supported the congregation with clarity and confidence, responding naturally to the changing moods of the service while allowing the liturgical action to remain at its centre. His careful registration made excellent use of the organ's refined tonal palette, complementing both the spoken and sung elements of the celebration.
The organ voluntaries, drawn from the Baroque repertoire, proved a particular highlight. Perfectly suited to the neoclassical character of the Collins instrument, these works combined elegant contrapuntal writing with graceful melodic lines and buoyant rhythmic energy. Damiani's thoughtful interpretations brought out the music's vitality without sacrificing its devotional character, while his stylish articulation and well-judged tempi allowed the organ to speak with both clarity and warmth. The instrument's bright principal chorus and gentle flute stops were especially effective in revealing the transparency and balance of the music.
The beautiful surroundings of Sacred Heart Church provided a fitting setting for this memorable celebration. The combination of dignified liturgy, enthusiastic congregational singing and accomplished organ playing created a service that was both spiritually uplifting and musically rewarding. It was an occasion that reflected the richness of the Catholic liturgical tradition and left a lasting impression on all who attended.
