Review: Gabs Returns to Exeter College
Gabs recently returned to Exeter College, Oxford, to play the organ for a series of Evening Services, bringing his musical talents once again to the college chapel.
Set within the calm and atmospheric surroundings of the chapel, the services were enhanced by the rich and expressive sound of the French-style Walker organ. The combination of beautiful architecture, reflective liturgy, and exceptional live music created a memorable experience for all who attended.
The Chapel Choir delivered warm and colourful performances of much-loved settings of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, singing with sensitivity and confidence. Complementing the choral repertoire and congregational hymns, Gabs performed a selection of organ voluntaries that demonstrated the instrument’s remarkable versatility. From delicate, contemplative passages to powerful and resonant climaxes, his playing showcased the full character of the organ and added depth to the services.
Whether attendees came for the music, a moment of quiet reflection, or simply to experience something different, the Evening Services offered a welcoming and enriching occasion. Open to all, they provided an opportunity to pause, listen, and enjoy music of the highest quality in a beautiful setting.
Gabs' return to Exeter College was clearly appreciated, and his contribution helped make these Evening Services both musically rewarding and spiritually uplifting.
